About Us

Who We Are and What We Do

The Manasquan River Watershed Association is a group of dedicated people interested in protecting and restoring the Manasquan River. The organization is comprised of local citizens, scientists, natural resource managers, environmental groups, municipal officials, civic groups, private businesses and anyone interested in environmental issues. Together, we join local knowledge and expertise to investigate problems and implement actions that will restore and protect the Manasquan River.

The organization was formed in 1996 and charged with obtaining a "No-Discharge Zone" designation for the Manasquan estuary. In 1999, this goal was achieved and for the first time it became illegal to dump boat waste into the Manasquan River. After achieving this worthy goal, members decided to focus on regional issues to improve protection of the river. It was agreed that a watershed approach would be the most effective strategy.

Since that time, the group has developed a characterization report that highlights environmental resources and identifies threats to those resources. A comprehensive watershed management plan was developed to address the identified threats and today acts as the guiding document for the organization. Each year, numerous actions contained in the management plan are implemented and pursued to preserve and protect this important region.
